Halaal food in Vietnam
Halaal food in Vietnam
Halaal food is available in most major cities in Vietnam, despite rumours to the contrary. A simple Google search for “Halaal restaurants near me” in your destination will usually reveal several of them.
We recently returned from a 10-day trip there and found many halaal restaurants. Please note that our preference is to taste local dishes whenever we are travelling. It’s only when we can’t find halaal local cuisine that we opt for Indian/Turkish food or other types of cuisine that we get in South Africa. We are generally fans of Southeast Asian food, and Vietnamese cuisine was no exception.
I have compiled this list to help other Muslim travellers.

More tips on eating in Vietnam
- Do not drink tap water. Bottled water is cheap.
- Avoid street food as it may result in food poisoning.
- Buy from restaurants. Food is cheap as compared to South African prices.
- Some halaal restaurants in Vietnam do serve alcohol. The ones we ate at didn’t.
- The currency is weak and your rands will go far.
- Try the exotic fruits, like mangosteen, jackfruit, rambutan, and custard apple.
- The coffee in Vietnam is amazing. Some must-try coffees are egg coffee, salt coffee, coconut coffee, drip coffee and Trung Nguyen Legend “The Energy Coffee That Changes Life” (A franchise coffee shop with pricey but delicious coffee.)
- Most places, including restaurants, do not take credit cards. Carry cash or use the Moreta App like we did.
